It has been 22 years since actor Kim Soon-cheol left us. He passed away on February 24, 2004, at the age of 66 at his home in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, while battling complications from diabetes. Even after two decades, the noble footsteps he left behind still remain in the hearts of many.
◇ The 'Final Promise' Practiced Through Body Donation
Kim Soon-cheol had a firm belief in sharing life during his lifetime. He pledged to donate his organs and body after death in 1991, and after his passing, his family honored his wishes by donating his body to Seoul National University Hospital. At a time when awareness of organ donation was lacking in society, the initiative taken by a famous actor became a cornerstone for medical advancement and left a significant impact socially.
◇ From a Pillar of the Theater World to a Star of the Home Theater
Kim Soon-cheol, a graduate of TBC's first talent recruitment, debuted in 1957 with the play 'Whale', marking the beginning of his acting career. He led the renaissance of Korean theater alongside the best actors of his time, such as Lee Soon-jae, Oh Hyun-kyung, and the late Lee Nak-hoon, through the National Theater Company and Experimental Theater. His portrayal of Maeng Jinsa in the play 'Maeng Jinsa's House' received acclaim for its unique character interpretation, and he ignited his artistic spirit by performing in over 200 plays throughout his life.
His achievements in broadcasting were also remarkable. In the 1980s, he gained public affection for his relatable and friendly portrayal of taxi driver Oh Jang-pal in the KBS drama 'Moonlight Family'. He then showcased his strong acting in the epic drama 'Tears of the Dragon' as Hongwu Emperor and in 'Companionship' as Choi Dosa. However, as his diabetes worsened in the late 1980s, he gradually had to cease his activities and ultimately left his fans.
◇ 'Eternal Actor' Remembered by Colleagues
To the fellow actors who shared joys and sorrows with him, he is a cherished memory. Veteran actor Lee Soon-jae mentioned in a past broadcast program the late Lee Nak-hoon, the late Kim Soon-cheol, and the late Oh Hyun-kyung, who were instrumental in the founding of TBC, reflecting, "They all left first, and I am the only one left," evoking deep emotions. His affectionate feelings for his departed friends brought tears to the viewers' eyes.
The master Kim Soon-cheol, who adorned a page in the history of Korean theater and drama. Although he has departed, the passionate fervor he poured out on stage and the 'promise of sharing' he upheld until his last moment continue to serve as a model for our society even today, on the occasion of his 22nd anniversary.
