The Netflix movie The Flood, combining the overwhelming scale of a disaster blockbuster with the imagination of the SF genre, has unveiled its details. Set in the confined space of a submerged apartment, this work vividly depicts moments of survival, love, and choice, promising both genre fun and deep emotional resonance.
On the morning of the 16th, the production presentation for the Netflix movie The Flood was held at CGV Yongsan I-Park Mall in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, attended by director Kim Byung-woo and actors Kim Da-mi, Park Hae-soo, and Kwon Eun-sung, who shared various stories about the work.
The movie The Flood is an SF disaster blockbuster depicting the struggle of those who hold the last hope for humanity's survival on the last day when the Earth is submerged in floodwaters, fighting for their lives inside a sinking apartment. Director Kim Byung-woo, recognized for his tension-filled direction in The Terror Live and PMC: The Bunker, is at the helm.
Director Kim Byung-woo expressed that the two genres of SF and disaster are intricately intertwined, allowing viewers to enjoy a variety of fun, and he hopes it will be remembered as a mysterious and lovely film. Regarding the title The Flood, he explained that it directly informs the genre situation while also carrying another ambiguous meaning towards the end of the film.
Actor Kim Da-mi plays the role of Anna, who struggles to survive with her only family, her son Jae-in. Kim Da-mi, taking on the challenge of maternal love for the first time, revealed that her curiosity about the implementation of the script and her trust in director Kim Byung-woo led her to choose the work. She added that she worked hard to instinctively show growth according to the situation and completed her emotions through her interactions with child actor Kwon Eun-sung.
Park Hae-soo plays the role of Hee-jo, a member of the security team, showcasing a dual charm where good and evil coexist. Park Hae-soo mentioned that the strange heaviness he felt when he first read the script was the decisive reason for choosing the work. Director Kim expressed satisfaction, stating that Park Hae-soo's sharp yet kind image perfectly matched the character.
Child actor Kwon Eun-sung, who plays Jae-in, shared episodes of his dedication to diving practice for underwater filming, raising expectations. The production team realistically implemented the disaster situation of flooding by combining actual underwater shooting with intricate CG work.
The director and actors emphasized that The Flood is a work that not only offers a spectacular visual experience but also poses questions about the essence of love. Kim Da-mi recommended that it would be better to follow the flow of music along with the scale, while Park Hae-soo hinted at the birth of a high-density emotional Korean-style SF disaster film.
The movie The Flood, featuring the stylish direction of Kim Byung-woo and the passionate performances of Kim Da-mi and Park Hae-soo, will be released worldwide on Netflix on December 19.
