In the video, MC Tak Jae-hoon asked Shin Jung-hwan the most sensitive question, whether he had actually contracted dengue fever.
Shin Jung-hwan firmly replied that he had not, revealing that a close older brother had given him the idea for the false explanation. In 2010, while facing allegations of illegal gambling in the Philippines, he claimed to have been infected with dengue fever as a reason for his delayed return and even released hospitalization photos, but he ultimately admitted after 14 years that this was a setup to deceive the public.
However, he added that the hospital photos released at that time were indeed from a real situation. Shin Jung-hwan explained that the individuals in the photos were real doctors and nurses, and the pictures were taken while undergoing an electrocardiogram at a local hospital in the Philippines, clarifying that the photos themselves were not fake.
He also clarified the controversy regarding his outfit upon his voluntary return. He explained that he wore a beanie with a hole in it, which drew criticism, as he had not been able to wash his hair due to preparations for his return and wore it to make his messy hair look tidy. Shin Jung-hwan bowed his head and apologized once again.
Shin Jung-hwan was arrested and indicted in 2010 on charges of overseas gambling and was sentenced to 8 months in prison. After a long period of self-reflection, it will be interesting to see how the public reacts as he admits to his past mistakes through this broadcast.
