Ipjjalbeun Haetnim, a popular mukbang YouTuber and broadcaster, has been reported for violating the Medical Act and the Drug Control Act, prompting the police to initiate a formal investigation.
The Mapo Police Station in Seoul announced on the 19th that they received a complaint against Mr. Kim and assigned the case to the drug crime investigation team for focused investigation. Considering the seriousness of the matter, the police plan to closely examine allegations of illegal use of psychotropic drugs and involvement in unlicensed medical practices.
This controversy began with allegations that Mr. Kim illegally obtained and consumed appetite suppressants containing the ingredient phentermine, commonly known as butterfly medicine. Phentermine is a substance strictly regulated as a psychotropic drug under the Drug Control Act due to its potential to cause hallucinations or dependency when abused. The complainant stated that Mr. Kim received the drug from Mr. Lee, who does not have a medical license, and requested an investigation, citing circumstances that go beyond simple administration to include aiding in drug delivery.
According to previously disclosed messenger conversations, it is reported that Mr. Lee mentioned Mr. Kim successfully lost 30 kg by taking diet pills several times a day. In particular, specific circumstances of drug delivery being captured on set are expected to become a key issue in the investigation regarding whether Mr. Kim was involved in the illegal distribution process. Under current law, unauthorized possession or administration of psychotropic drugs can result in severe criminal penalties.
Additional allegations of violating the Medical Act have also been raised. It is claimed that Mr. Kim used a high-frequency stimulator, which can only be handled by medical professionals, in an external location outside of medical institutions. Using specialized medical equipment in unauthorized locations constitutes a violation of the current Medical Act.
