Ha Jung-woo's fourth directorial work, 'The Neighbors Upstairs', which caused a stir in theaters last year with its bold subject matter, will meet global viewers through Netflix on March 26.
'The Neighbors Upstairs' is a 19+ closed-door talk comedy that twists the very realistic pain of floor noise into a bold fantasy of 'sharing secret sex lives'. The story depicts the unpredictable events that unfold when the couple living below, Jung-a (played by Gong Hyo-jin) and Hyun-soo (played by Kim Dong-wook), who are struggling with their strained relationship, receive an unimaginable proposal from their upstairs neighbors, Mr. Kim (played by Ha Jung-woo) and Soo-kyung (played by Lee Ha-nee), while suffering from the noise that comes every night.
This work has garnered significant attention from the production stage, led by director and star Ha Jung-woo, along with top actors from Chungmuro, including Gong Hyo-jin, Kim Dong-wook, and Lee Ha-nee. Director Ha Jung-woo, who has established a unique directorial world through films like 'Roller Coaster' and 'The Last Ride', received acclaim for reinterpreting the Spanish film 'The People Upstairs' with a Korean sentiment and his unique humor code.
The perfect chemistry among the actors is also a key point of interest. Ha Jung-woo and Lee Ha-nee showcase their first couple performance in this work, while Gong Hyo-jin and Ha Jung-woo reunite after 13 years since the movie 'Love Fiction', drawing attention. Kim Dong-wook also elevated the immersion of the film based on the synergy proven with Ha Jung-woo in the 'Along with the Gods' series.
The box office performance is also remarkable. Despite the onslaught of Hollywood blockbusters like 'Zootopia 2' and 'Avatar: The Way of Water' upon its release in December, it maintained the number one spot in the Korean box office for eight consecutive days. Despite the limitations of its adult-only rating, it surpassed a final audience count of 540,000, earning praise as the "pinnacle of Ha Jung-woo's comedy".
Meanwhile, Ha Jung-woo is also making headlines with his active engagements outside of his work. He officially acknowledged his relationship with actress Cha Jung-won, placing him in the spotlight, and is set to return to the small screen after 19 years through the new tvN drama 'How to Become a Building Owner in Korea', drawing public interest.
